Patrick Russill<\/strong> <\/strong>\u2013 Emeritus Head of Choral Conducting, Royal Academy of Music, London,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Patrick Russill is one of the leading figures in English church music and choral conducting pedagogy. Following a brilliant studentship at New College, Oxford, where he was an organ scholar, 1972-1975, he forged a career over five decades as choral conductor, organist, scholar and conservatoire teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick was Fernside Head of Choral Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1997 to 2024, and is now Emeritus Head of Choral Conducting there. Since 1999 he has been Director of Music of the Church of the London Oratory, whose professional choir is recognised as one of the world\u2019s leading choirs in the Roman Catholic tradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick was awarded a personal chair as Professor of the University of London in 2022 and is now Professor Emeritus there. He was Visiting Professor of Choral Conducting at the Leipzig Hochschule f\u00fcr Musik und Theater 2002-2023. He has also been a guest professor in conservatoires in Vienna, Helsinki, Stockholm, Berlin, D\u00fcsseldorf, Cluj-Napoca and Strasbourg. He was Chief Examiner of the Royal College of Organists 2005-17, and in 2015 he was honoured by the Association of British Choral Directors with its annual \u2018Chair\u2019s Award for Choral Leadership\u2019, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of conservatoire choral conducting training in the UK. He has been awarded Membership of the Royal Academy of Music, Fellowship of the Royal School of Church Music, and the Medal of the Royal College of Organists \u2013 the highest distinctions honoris causa <\/em>of each institution \u2013 for his seminal influence in the UK on choral conducting performance, conservatoire education and standards in church music. In 2024 he was appointed a Papal Knight of the Order of St Gregory, for his influence on and achievement in Catholic church music in the UK and abroad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
